Poor Joe was in action at Gettysburg, and after that battle, grew quite ill and was sent home. He died at his home surrounded by his loving family - His sister Jane (who would marry Col. Nelson F. Craigue) and his brother George Spafford (who was also in the War as a physician), 25 April 1867 (age 28). "He is not dead but sleepeth; Not lost but gone before."

- Linda M. Welch
