Carter and the University of Vermont Agricultural Expriment Station, as part of a study of hay harvesting techniques and costs in Vermont. Thank you for this video. I have been reading a number of books about the life in the Cariboo, B.C. Canada and ranchers often refer to the buck rake. My 94 year old cousins tried to explain the method in way the buck rake was used with horses. She had a few photos but your video explained it thoroughly.

Buck rake -- from field to barn, sometimes a long trip! I can see why the wind stackers were attractive. And also why they didn't last long. Seems maybe the field chopper destroyed nutrients?

I was looking for a way to collect hay (mulch hay),economically, on my small produce farm. The buck rake , after seeing it in this informitive film , looks like the choice for our operation. It should be easy enough to build, also maintain. Thankyou

During WWII my Dad Made a buck rake on the back of a Model A Ford because Tractors were not readily available. We Shocked the hay with a trip rake then he backed the buckrake into the shocks untill the rake was loaded. Then rased the rake and headed into the hay stack area. It was much faster than the ones on Tractors. We farmed in S. Central Idaho.
