Collection Overview

Louis L. McAllister photographed people and places near Burlington, Vermont for 60 years. He was born in Columbus, Nebraska on October 16, 1876, the son of Julius S. McAllister (born 1841 in Lincoln, VT) and Rosette Gould (born in Vermont in 1851). Julius McAllister worked as a photographer and dentist in Washington D.C., Bristol, Vermont and Columbus, Nebraska. Around 1895, Julius, his third wife Amy, and their children left Nebraska for the Union Soldiers’ Colony in Fitzgerald, Georgia. By 1900, Julius and Amy were divorced, and Amy and her stepson Louis were working as photographers in Thomasville, Georgia.

December 9, 1942. PINE STREET CENTRAL PLANT STOREHOUSE NO.1 This view of the storehouse No. 1 shows it as it appeared in December 1942 after the rough boarding and roof work had been nearly completed. This storehouse was constructed mainly for storing sand and salt for winter use in sanding the streets and sidewalks, also for storing the snow fence and sand boxes during the summer. In addition to this, however, the ground floor of the original section of the old Robinson-Edwards Lumber shed shown at the right end of the storehouse is used for storing machinery and equipment while the south end shown at the left side of the picture is used for storing small tools and equipment. Note the 60 foot timber truss supported by one center pier which was constructed between the two halves of the original lumber shed making a total length of 120 feet and a total width of 40 feet. Note the two salt bins at either side of the sand storage space, also the Elevating Conveyor used in loading sand.

Burlington Street Department, Burlington, Vermont. This view shows the dumping area at the Asphalt Plant after approximately 300 loads of snow had been dumped the previous night. Note the caked condition of the snow as it is dumped from the truck showing that the snow is compressed and packed into the truck bodies by the force of the blower on the loader so that a cubic yard contains approximately twice the weight of the same volume loaded by hand.

Pine Street Central Plant Storehouse No. 1 This view shows storehouse No. 1 as it appeared on July 1, 1943, after improvement had been completed on the easterly side. Imitation brick siding was used for this job. All work on this building including the moving, re-erection, fabricating and erecting the timber trusses (using TECO Split Ring Connectors) and all other details of construction were accomplished with regular Street Department employees during periods when these men were not needed on regular Departmental work considerable of which was cold weather.
