Collection Overview

Louis L. McAllister photographed people and places near Burlington, Vermont for 60 years. He was born in Columbus, Nebraska on October 16, 1876, the son of Julius S. McAllister (born 1841 in Lincoln, VT) and Rosette Gould (born in Vermont in 1851). Julius McAllister worked as a photographer and dentist in Washington D.C., Bristol, Vermont and Columbus, Nebraska. Around 1895, Julius, his third wife Amy, and their children left Nebraska for the Union Soldiers’ Colony in Fitzgerald, Georgia. By 1900, Julius and Amy were divorced, and Amy and her stepson Louis were working as photographers in Thomasville, Georgia.

      Photograph dated Oct. 17, 1941. Original caption reads: "Barrett Street Improvements: This view shows the Rossetti residence [32 Barrett St.] after having been raised approximately ten feet and moved back off the street line approximately fifteen feet. The chimney being constructed was carried to the sub-foundation footings to prevent settlement. Note the cement blocks used for the cellar walls on top of the concrete sub-cellar foundation walls; also note that the sills have been replaced and new clapboards and siding have been completed; also note that the filling has been carried to a point even with the front of the house which is approximately fifteen feet back of the street line; also note completion of sidewalk construction on new fill and approach to house.

        Photograph dated June 19, 1941. Original caption reads: "Barrett Street Improvements: This view shows the condition of Barrett Street as the general improvements were started including new concrete integral curbing and gutter on both sides, concrete sidewalk on the northerly side and telford stone base with asphalt penetration binder course and asphalt hot plant mix wearing course. This improvement also included the raising, moving and construction of a new reinforced concrete basement wall and chimney for the Rossetti residence shown in the left background of this picture nearly opposite the concrete mixer. The crew in the foreground are starting the installation of the underground drainage tile and concrete integral curbing and gutter at the intersection of Colchester Avenue.

          Photograph dated Sept. 5, 1941. Original caption reads: Barrett Street Improvements: This view shows the Rossetti residence in progress of being raised. Note the condition of the sill and the studding of the sidewalls; also note that the sidewalls are filled with brick and mortar in the spaces between studdings. This added considerable weight to the structure and with the rotten condition of the sills (the sill in the right foreground having been entirely gone and the sill shown in the picture is a new timber which had to be put in place before the house could be raised) made the raising process difficult.

                Photograph dated Aug. 4, 1941. Original caption reads: Barrett Street Improvements: This view shows the condition of the Rosetti residence before remodeling and moving was started. Note the new integral curbing and gutter just constructed on the top of the old stone retaining wall about ten feet in front of the house; also the old wooden stairs necessary to descend in order to enter the ground floor of the house which is approximately ten feet below the surface of the street; also not condition of old chimney which was later rebuilt on the outside of the house.

                    Sept. 1, 1929 dated photo. Colchester Ave. north of Chase Street showing the 12% grade between Chase Street and Barrett Street and the approach to the new Winooski Bridge. Textile mills seen in distance. Note the rough condition of the pavement in the foreground as well as the irregular appearance of the curb line. This picture taken just before repaving construction work began. Dwellings numbering in the 400s seen to the left. On the right is No. 6-8 Chase Street, Dan Day Brick Store. Note that curb construction is continuing through cold weather in order to put the street in passable condition to leave for the winter. Final surfacing is to be done in the spring.

                            May 25, 1942. Hayward Street Improvements Project. This view is taken from the intersection of Howard St. looking northerly to the intersection of Marble Ave. The excavation of the old pavement was partially done last winter and completed this month after which the sand cushion and telford stone base was constructed and the penetration course of chestnut stone has been spread over the telford base and roughly graded ready for rolling with the 15 ton steam roller. Note the condition of the old curbs which will be reset or replaced as the condition warrants.

                              Allis-Chalmers, Model IB Tractor with 16 HP Engine, Equipped with a Baker "V" Type Sidewalk Snow Plow. This view shows the Tractor Plow unit proceeding north on Hungerford Terrace after an 8 inch fall of snow combined with rain, which made the plowing very heavy and difficult for horse drawn equipment, but this unit did not experience any difficulties.                                 February 11, 1946 Institute Road - Road Excavation and Street Widening Project This view was taken from a point on Institute Road just westerly of the proposed rock excavation site looking toward North Ave. The rock excavation to be removed can be seen in the south portion of the highway. Note the rock also on the north side of the road which should be removed in order to develop the street for its full width. Note: A more detailed description can be found on the original print.

                                  March 22, 1946 Institute Road - Rock Excavation Street Widening Project. This view looking easterly toward North Ave. shows the work after it was practically completed on the south side. Note the large stump in the center background being hauled on a stoneboat by the four-wheel drive Walter truck. Approximately 650 cubic yards of rock excavation was removed from both sides of the street and used for filling and widening the shoulders. This project was requested by the Park Department to improve the safety of the traveling public in getting to and from North Beach. The work was done by the Street Department.

                                      December 11, 1945. City of Burlington, Vermont, Street Department Lakeside Ave. Pavement Base Construction This view was taken from a point near the intersection of Central Ave. looking easterly toward the underpass. Note that the temporary wearing surface had been constructed for the base after the work of mixing and stabilizing the base had been completed as shown in the picture under date of Dec. 5, 1945. This stage of construction was done to enable the street to be used during the winter and early spring without experiencing the troubles of early spring break-up of the old dirt and cinder street. The pavement will be completed in the summer of 1946. Note the crushed stone base placed in the driveway after regrading to meet new grades. To the left in background is the Blodgett Co.

                                                August 15, 1939 PWA Project No. Vt. 1097-F This view shows the completed pavement at the intersection of North Bend Street and Ward Street. The old road bed was scarified, reshaped and treated with stabilizing emulsion late in the fall of 1938 and a base course of asphalt penetration was constructed with one application of 85-100 penetration asphalt binder. A wearing surface of two inches of Plant-Max asphalt using tempering fluid was constructed during the early summer of 1939.
