Description
March 28, 1941. College Street Sewer: This view shows the sewer construction on upper College Street between Williams Street and So. Prospect Street. This sewer was reconstructed because of the condition of the old sewer which was the oldest sewer constructed in the City of Burlington, in 1872. This construction was made necessary because of the construction of the University of Vermont Waterman Memorial Building shown at the left of the picture. The sewer had to be constructed at a depth of 14 1/2 feet below the surface where the manhole was installed leading from the new building. Many boulders were encumbered which had to be blasted, some of which can be seen at the right of the picture. Crane with bucket seen center. Behind it in center distance is the peak of University of Vermont's Old Mill. Other campus buildings (on left) are the Bishop's house, Waterman and on the right a fraternity.
