Description

The steamer ferry Chateaugay on Lake Champlain. Automobiles can be seen on deck. Originally built in 1888 the steamboat Chateaugay was the first iron hulled steamboat on Lake Champlain. Serving the Champlain Transportation Company for 51 years. Notations on the photo suggest it was used for publication. Undated but may be 1920s, 1930s.

Originally built in 1888 the steamboat Chateaugay was the first iron hulled steamboat on Lake Champlain. Serving the Champlain Transportation Company for 51 years. In 1925 she was converted into an automobile ferry. The last two seasons of her career were spent as a clubhouse for the Burlington Yacht Club. It was only a matter of time before the Chateaugay would be scrapped altogether, but then events took a turn that gave the old Chateaugay not just a new lease on life, but a whole new career. December 23, 1939 Lake Winnipesaukee's famous steamer the Mt. Washington burned at the pier at The Weirs. Five days later, owner Captain Leander Lavallee found the Chateaugay in Burlington, Vermont as a replacement. April 3, 1940 the vessel was stripped down and cut into 20 sections like a giant loaf of bread. These pieces were loaded onto 18 flatbed railroad cars and shipped to Lakeport NH where she was reassembled. August 12, 1940, the steamer Mt. Washington II was launched with an enthusiastic crowd to wish her well. Source of information: Farewell Old Mount Washington by Edward H. Blackstone The M/S Mount Washington, ex Chateaugay, is still in service today. She has a very rich, unique history. Having been a passenger steamboat, a sidewheel automobile ferry, a floating yacht club and a twin-screw motor vessel on two completely separate bodies of water, Lake Champlain and Lake Winnipesaukee.
