Description

1949 photo of Faculty of the Middlebury College French Summer School, taken in front of the Chateau Francais (?) (built 1925). Enrollment in 1949: 362. In addition to the senior faculty seated in front, many of whom had professorships at other American colleges, additional instructors from France were hired to ensure the authenticity of spoken French (students agreed to speak only French while on campus). Seated, far left: Stephen Freeman, future historian of the Middlebury Language Schools. Photo 2.
