Description

1927. Foot traffic alone was allowed on this temporary pontoon Winooski Bridge following the November 1927 flood of the Winooski River. Bridge was built and maintained with the help of troops from Fort Ethan Allen. Permanent bridge built in 1928. Champlain Mill in the background.

My father, Mark D. Archambault, MD rode his horse, Nellie across that pontoon bridge on his way to Burlington High School. I remember his story about how every day he had to talk to Nellie to get her across in the winter.It was quite a feat. He was coming from Essex Junction where he was born to Dr. Joseph and Helena Archambault and later practice medicine in the same house on Pearl St. There he lived and raised his family until his death in 1975.
