Collection Overview

Louis L. McAllister photographed people and places near Burlington, Vermont for 60 years. He was born in Columbus, Nebraska on October 16, 1876, the son of Julius S. McAllister (born 1841 in Lincoln, VT) and Rosette Gould (born in Vermont in 1851). Julius McAllister worked as a photographer and dentist in Washington D.C., Bristol, Vermont and Columbus, Nebraska. Around 1895, Julius, his third wife Amy, and their children left Nebraska for the Union Soldiers’ Colony in Fitzgerald, Georgia. By 1900, Julius and Amy were divorced, and Amy and her stepson Louis were working as photographers in Thomasville, Georgia.

"The Birches" is lettered over the doorway to the right of the open porch at ground level. This porch has tree log supports and railings. Six over six window panes can be seen in the windows. It has a pitched roof and a central chimney. There is an enclosed upper level porch. See also mcalA11F16i11

A two story brick home with a pitched slate roof and dormer centrally placed. Wood panel shutters are seen on the upper story windows. There is a small portico entry with Doric columns at the front door with sidelights. Large evergreen trees surround the grounds. No. 101 is on the right porch column. Location unknown. 216 So. Prospect Street. Built in 1871 for George Francis, it was later owned by the Shaw family, and, at the time of this photograph, it was the residence of Henry T. Way, whose father Harry had purchased it in 1915. It is currently the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity house. Architectural style is described as "Italianate." To the right is a Christmas display in the snow of Santa, sleigh and two reindeer. Dated mid 1940s.
