Collection Overview

Louis L. McAllister photographed people and places near Burlington, Vermont for 60 years. He was born in Columbus, Nebraska on October 16, 1876, the son of Julius S. McAllister (born 1841 in Lincoln, VT) and Rosette Gould (born in Vermont in 1851). Julius McAllister worked as a photographer and dentist in Washington D.C., Bristol, Vermont and Columbus, Nebraska. Around 1895, Julius, his third wife Amy, and their children left Nebraska for the Union Soldiers’ Colony in Fitzgerald, Georgia. By 1900, Julius and Amy were divorced, and Amy and her stepson Louis were working as photographers in Thomasville, Georgia.

If the man in the front row, far left is Arthur L. Chapman, whose Junior portrait appears in the 1927 Ariel, this is the Class of 1928. Photo very likely taken in 1958 because of the similar Waterman setting and background seen in other 1958 reunion photos.

Reunion of UVM Class of 1911 assembled outside what is now Royall Tyler Theater (then a gymnasium). Class reunions often had a costume competition, which explains the Roman togas and laurel wreaths. The reunion of 1956 had 21 registered from the Class of '11--approx. the number here--but clothing and age suggests perhaps a reunion in the 1940s.
