Collection Overview
Louis L. McAllister photographed people and places near Burlington, Vermont for 60 years. He was born in Columbus, Nebraska on October 16, 1876, the son of Julius S. McAllister (born 1841 in Lincoln, VT) and Rosette Gould (born in Vermont in 1851). Julius McAllister worked as a photographer and dentist in Washington D.C., Bristol, Vermont and Columbus, Nebraska. Around 1895, Julius, his third wife Amy, and their children left Nebraska for the Union Soldiers’ Colony in Fitzgerald, Georgia. By 1900, Julius and Amy were divorced, and Amy and her stepson Louis were working as photographers in Thomasville, Georgia.
In 1907 Louis McAllister married Cora Shepard (born about 1872 in Vermont) in Holland, Michigan. By 1910, they were living in Queen City Park in South Burlington, Vermont, where Louis established a photography studio. The McAllisters moved to Burlington, and by 1919 they lived at 47 N. Winooski Avenue. They continued to occupy a summer cottage at Queen City Park, and were active in the Queen City Park Association, which held spiritualist camp meetings annually. McAllister conducted his photography business from home until his death in 1963.
McAllister’s “trademark” was his panorama camera which made him familiar to all sorts of groups ranging from graduating classes to state police to summer camp groups. In addition he did print 8 x 10 photos, many of which document building construction and Burlington Street Department projects, as well as group and individual portraits.
The L.L. McAllister Collection includes portraits, construction projects, buildings, businesses and events in the Burlington area covering the period ca. 1920-1960. The collection also includes photos of street, bridge, airport and sewer construction and repair, as well as group portraits of clubs, schools, etc.

February 21, 1944. This view shows the dumping area at the foot of College St. in front of the Central Vermont Freight House. The snow dumped the night before was being bulldozed over the front of the dock into the lake when this picture was taken. Several thousand cubic yards of snow were dumped at this point during the winter.

Burlington Street Department, Burlington, Vermont. This view shows the dumping area at the Asphalt Plant after approximately 300 loads of snow had been dumped the previous night. Note the caked condition of the snow as it is dumped from the truck showing that the snow is compressed and packed into the truck bodies by the force of the blower on the loader so that a cubic yard contains approximately twice the weight of the same volume loaded by hand.

Photograph dated Mar. 22, 1944. Original caption reads: "Burlington Street Department, Burlington, Vermont This view shows one of our sidewalk plowing and sanding units consisting of a rubber tired Allis-Chalmers IB Tractor with Baker V-Type 5 ft. width plow and a trailer sand spreader designed and built in the street Department repair shop. Note the extra metal weights placed on the rear wheel hubs to give added traction. The V-type plow has been found from experience to be more satisfactory than the reversible blade plows, especially after heavy drifting storms. The sand spreader holds approximately 1/2 cubic yard of sand. It has sloping false bottom lined with sheet metal which assists the flow of sand to the rotor which is placed just to the rear of the main axle. The surface of this rotor is covered with beads of steel which operates against a steel fibre brush to deliver a carpet of sand 30 inches in width over the surface of the icy sidewalks. The power for revolving the rotor is obtained from the small wheelbarrow rubber tired wheel which make a contact on the surface of one of the trailer wheels and is transmitted to the rotor by V-belt. The pressure of this third wheel against the surface of the trailer wheel can be increased or diminished or thrown out of contact entirely by changing the position of a small lever mounted on the side of the trailer which is easily accessible to the driver."

Photograph dated Jan. 7, 1941. Original caption reads: "Allis-Chalmers tractors and Baker "V" type snowplow units used for plowing sidewalks. These four snowplow units replaced the thirteen horse-drawn units that had always been used previously. No. 1 and No. 2 Tractors were purchased in November, 1939 and No. 3 and No. 4 Tractors were purchased in November, 1940. These units do the entire sidewalk plowing consisting of approximately 130 miles of sidewalks in the city of Burlington at very much less cost and much more efficiently than the old horse-drawn units. The trailer sleds shown in the picture were used for sanding sidewalks during the winter 1940-41."

Photograph dated Feb. 22, 1940. Original caption reads: "The Snow King Rotary Plow operated by the Walter Snow Fighter Truck blowing heavy frozen snow on the shoulder of the Burlington Municipal Airport runways. Both the north-south and the east-west runways were opened for a width of 250 feet and for a length of 3,600 feet after each storm, the snow being plowed back into windrows from which it is blown as seen in the picture. A total of sixty-six hours work with the Rotary Plow was necessary to dispose of the entire amount of snow accumulated on the two runways, taxi-strip and hangar areas over the period from February 11, 1940 to February 22, 1940, inclusive, during which time the Weather Bureau reported a total snow fall of 11.8 inches, some of which was combined with several hours of rain and a lowering of the temperature to sub-zero weather.

ALLIS-CHALMERS, MODEL 1B TRACTOR WITH 16 HP ENGINE EQUIPPED WITH A BAKER "V" TYPE SIDEWALK SNOW PLOW NO. 281420-223V-107. This view shows the No.1 Tractor plow unit plowing snow in Battery Park. Notice the depth of the snowfall which is approximately eight inches. This equipment did not experience any difficulty in plowing this depth, although as you will note in the picture the snow had become frozen and difficult to plow with ordinary horse-drawn plows. This unit removed the snow from three routes formerly requiring the services of three horse-drawn units, the time required being approximately five to six hours depending upon the weather conditions, the gas consumption being approximately four to five gallons per trip. The total distance covered by the entire trip is approximately twenty miles. The specifications of this unit can be found on the back of the original photograph. 1938-1940

Mar. 18, 1940. This view shows the Snow King Rotary Snow Plow in section mounted on the front of the Street Department's Walter's Snow Fighter Truck in front of the Post Office on Main Street. Note the discharge spout delivering snow over the high side boards of the five cubic yard truck. This loader is capable of loading a five cubic yard load in less than one-half minutes and has frequently loaded one hundred-five cubic yard truck loads of new fallen snow in approximately one and one-half hours working time including delays because of traffic and street intersections clean up.

Feb. 17, 1944 dated photo. Burlington Street Department, Snow Removal Methods and Equipment. This view of Main Street looking westerly from the intersection of South Winooski Ave. showing the effect of the clear Rock Salt applied to the pavement the previous day with the equipment shown in view No. 1. Note the great amount of snow piled along the gutters and the entire absence of snow in the traveled portion of the street, thus eliminating the necessity of applying sand for traction purposes. Although the pavement is wet with the salt brine formed from the melting snow it does not create a slippery condition because the tires seem to grip the pavement as the frost is removed from the surface. On the left is the Court House and the mansard roofed building that once was a place of worship for the First Baptist Church. Businesses and retail stores on the right including offers for personal loans, and the Federal Savings Bank. Cars parked on both sides of the street.

Feb. 17, 1944. Snow Removal Project by the Burlington street dept. of Burlington, Vermont. This view looking east shows the results of using salt as an aid to snow removal and safe driving conditions. Note the height of the snow banks where the snow has been plowed to the shoulder and the absence of snow in the traveled portion of the street only a few hours after the application of the salt. To the right are businesses that include Amoco gas station, Chrysler car dealer.

This view shows the Allis-Chalmers Tractor #1 mounted with reversible blade plow being used to clean the ice and snow from the pavement on Main Street, March 18, 1940, pushing the ice and snow into windrows for loading by Snow King Rotary Snow Plow. Directly behind are the First National Stores and Gove the Florist. Gove is at 184 Main Street.
