Collection Overview

Louis L. McAllister photographed people and places near Burlington, Vermont for 60 years. He was born in Columbus, Nebraska on October 16, 1876, the son of Julius S. McAllister (born 1841 in Lincoln, VT) and Rosette Gould (born in Vermont in 1851). Julius McAllister worked as a photographer and dentist in Washington D.C., Bristol, Vermont and Columbus, Nebraska. Around 1895, Julius, his third wife Amy, and their children left Nebraska for the Union Soldiers’ Colony in Fitzgerald, Georgia. By 1900, Julius and Amy were divorced, and Amy and her stepson Louis were working as photographers in Thomasville, Georgia.

This view shows our new Elgin Sweeper near Burlington City Hall after having gone through its demonstration ready for service. This street sweeper was delivered on April 13, and replaced the old Elgin which had given satisfactory service for fourteen years.

Photograph dated June 29, 1946. Original caption reads: "Allen Street - Asphalt Paving Project This view taken from the intersection of Elmwood Ave. shows the completed Hot Asphalt Pavement in front of St. Joseph's Church. This pavement had been needed for several years but due to shortage of funds and materials during the war period it was delayed for construction until this year. This pavement was constructed of stone-filled sheet asphalt hot plant mix approximately 2 inches in thickness.
