Collection Overview
Louis L. McAllister photographed people and places near Burlington, Vermont for 60 years. He was born in Columbus, Nebraska on October 16, 1876, the son of Julius S. McAllister (born 1841 in Lincoln, VT) and Rosette Gould (born in Vermont in 1851). Julius McAllister worked as a photographer and dentist in Washington D.C., Bristol, Vermont and Columbus, Nebraska. Around 1895, Julius, his third wife Amy, and their children left Nebraska for the Union Soldiers’ Colony in Fitzgerald, Georgia. By 1900, Julius and Amy were divorced, and Amy and her stepson Louis were working as photographers in Thomasville, Georgia.
In 1907 Louis McAllister married Cora Shepard (born about 1872 in Vermont) in Holland, Michigan. By 1910, they were living in Queen City Park in South Burlington, Vermont, where Louis established a photography studio. The McAllisters moved to Burlington, and by 1919 they lived at 47 N. Winooski Avenue. They continued to occupy a summer cottage at Queen City Park, and were active in the Queen City Park Association, which held spiritualist camp meetings annually. McAllister conducted his photography business from home until his death in 1963.
McAllister’s “trademark” was his panorama camera which made him familiar to all sorts of groups ranging from graduating classes to state police to summer camp groups. In addition he did print 8 x 10 photos, many of which document building construction and Burlington Street Department projects, as well as group and individual portraits.
The L.L. McAllister Collection includes portraits, construction projects, buildings, businesses and events in the Burlington area covering the period ca. 1920-1960. The collection also includes photos of street, bridge, airport and sewer construction and repair, as well as group portraits of clubs, schools, etc.

Undated but may be from around 1930. This is a neighborhood grocery store located at the intersection of Riverside Ave and Intervale Ave. This photo appears in "Images of America Burlington, Vol. 2, p. 60. Authors suggest this store may have been owned by Sophia Saiger as she is listed as being a grocer in the 1930 city directory and residing at 178 Intervale Ave.

August 15, 1939 PWA Project Vt. 1097-F, Intersection of Intervale Avenue, Elmwood Avenue and North Street. This view shows the broad intersection of the three above streets after the completion of the Plant-Mix asphalt pavement consisting of a leveling course averaging approximately one and one-half inches in thickness and a wearing course of two inches in thickness. The leveling course was constructed with coarse aggregate or "Binder" material with 50-60 penetration asphalt cement. The wearing surface was constructed with fine aggregate using a mixture of 50-60 penetration asphalt cement and American Bitumuls tempering fluid.

City of Burlington, Vermont, Street Department Lakeside Ave. Pavement Base Construction This view was taken from a point near the intersection of Central Ave. looking easterly toward the underpass. Note that the temporary wearing surface had been constructed for the base after the work of mixing and stabilizing the base had been completed as shown in the picture under date of Dec. 5, 1945. This stage of construction was done to enable the street to be used during the winter and early spring without experiencing the troubles of early spring break-up of the old dirt and cinder street. The pavement will be completed in the summer of 1946. Note the crushed stone base placed in the driveway after regrading to meet new grades. To the left in background is the Blodgett Co.

December 5, 1945. City of Burlington, Vermont, Street Department Lakeside Ave. Pavement Base Construction This view was taken from a point near the intersection of Central Ave. looking easterly toward the underpass. The new factory building just completed for the Blodgett Co. is shown with parking area base recently constructed between the street line and the building. Note the asphalt emulsion stabilized base which was mixed the previous day before taking this picture. Cold weather and frost conditions had frozen the base mixture on the left half of the street but the job was continued on the north half in spite of the low temperatures as the street had to be put in condition to receive traffic for the winter, this street being on a regular bus line. The job was continued by placing a 2 inch layer of crushed stone on this stabilized base and penetrating the same with asphalt emulsion and covering with concrete sand as a "blotter" for the winter and then opened to traffic. This project will be continued to completion in the spring by constructing an integral concrete curb and gutter on the south side of a 2 inch hot plant mix wearing surface over the entire pavement area. Note the asphalt distributor applying emulsion and the tractor and harrow mixing the base.

Feb. 17, 1944 dated photo. Burlington Street Department, Snow Removal Methods and Equipment. This view of Main Street looking westerly from the intersection of South Winooski Ave. showing the effect of the clear Rock Salt applied to the pavement the previous day with the equipment shown in view No. 1. Note the great amount of snow piled along the gutters and the entire absence of snow in the traveled portion of the street, thus eliminating the necessity of applying sand for traction purposes. Although the pavement is wet with the salt brine formed from the melting snow it does not create a slippery condition because the tires seem to grip the pavement as the frost is removed from the surface. On the left is the Court House and the mansard roofed building that once was a place of worship for the First Baptist Church. Businesses and retail stores on the right including offers for personal loans, and the Federal Savings Bank. Cars parked on both sides of the street.

May, 5, 1943. Rail Removal Project. Burlington, Vermont by the city street dept. This view shows the construction of the "A" Frame and the method of attaching the frame to the end of the 26 foot boom of the Universal Truck Crane. The chain falls attached to the end of the frame and the boom were used for raising the frame when moving or when rough or uneven surface would not allow the frame to slide over the pavement without digging into the surface. Behind to the left is 174 Main, location of the Burlington Mutual Fire Insurance Company and on the right is 184 Main location of Gove, the Florist.

Winooski Ave. where a hot-mix asphalt pavement had been constructed over the top of the rails to a depth of 2 to 3 inches. On the right are businesses that include (extreme right) Kent-Thomas Co advertising Armstrong tires at 211-213 Main, further up is 229 Main location of Nourse's restaurant. Across the street at 220 Main is the Chittenden County Jail, J. Frederick Lynch, county sheriff.

Sept. 1, 1929. View of Main Street looking east up the hill from intersection of Church Street. Note the old trolley car tracks and overhead wires, also uneven and worn condition of the old brick pavement. This picture was taken just before constructing the new asphalt pavement by the city street dept., using the old brick pavement as a base. Parked cars and businesses line both sides of the street. On the right is the Strong Theatre with a sign along one side of the building advertising "Vermont home of Chilton Paint Co." In the distant center of photo a car cruises through the intersection of Main and South Winooski Ave.

March 13, 1940. Intersection of North Street and North Winooski Avenue. This view shows the style of new street signs just erected on North Street from North Winooski Avenue to North Avenue. These signs were designed, constructed and erected by Street Department employees during the winter months. The name plates were purchased from the Lyle Signs Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. There were seventeen of these signs constructed and erected on this street. Retail stores can be seen and include a barber shop, Kirby's Radio Shop (250 North St.) and Brockton Shoe Store (248 North St).

These signs were designed, constructed and erected by Street Department employees during the winter months. The name plates were purchased from the Lyle Signs Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. There were seventeen of these signs constructed and erected on this street. The street lamp posts have spites projecting out from them to aid workmen climbing up. Retail stores and businesses include the The Silver Star Restaurant at 202 North. Grand Union in-between the Silver Star and Mazel's that is at 194 North. Dentist office above the Silver Star.
