St Albans Oct 20/69

Still Remembered Parents

I now take my Pen in hand to inform you that I am well and unhurt although one ball struck within one foot of me yesterday about one oclock a party of Robers & horse thieves came into town and arrested a number of citizens to prevent giving alarm entered all the banks took what money their was in them then proceeded to the livery stables and took what horses they could find stoped men on the street and took their horses away from them if any man resisted their [UNCLEAR: "progress" due to illegible content] they was shot down which was the case with (2) two men one of them they think cant live -------------------------------- Page 2 --------------------------------after getting what they wanted they started for Canada with some (150) one hund & fifty to (200) two hund thousand dols only 25 men in the whole took horses went to the Sadles shop and Sadles & Bridles. after they left [GAP: 3 letters missing due to illegible content] men began to get their wepons[sic] which was at their houses some 25 or 30 mounted horses and followed after them they came up with two of them at Slab city arrested them and durring the day they have found 8 more of them

What will be the result I can not tell Tell father that if he has any St Albans money to get rid of it as soon as possible it is only worth 50cts on a dol

There is no trade in town it is all excitement
