Abstract: James Marsh Read (1833-1865), an 1853 graduate of the University of Vermont, was an explorer of the American West and a Civil War soldier. He wrote critical essays about the events of the time and kept extensive correspondence with his family. These materials are combined with the collected research and manuscript of the collection’s donor, Gretchen Howe Miller, providing insight into James M. Read’s life and the issues of this period in American and Vermont history.

Abstract: Rice was a journalist who served time as a member of the Vermont state legislature and as president of the hospital in Brattleboro, Vermont. Collection includes correspondents and other papers relating to the Brattleboro Reformer and Vermont Printing Company, Brattleboro, Vermont, Central Vermont Railway, Rice’s legislative service and political concerns, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and New England Kurn Hattin Homes, both of which he served as president, Vermont Hospital Survey, New Hampshire-Vermont hospitilaztion services, Irish Terrier Club of America, and other topics; and photos of Maine Fishing trips and 1897 European tour.

Rixford and his wife Elizabeth (Leach) Rixford, and Susan K. Rixford and Mary E. (Rixford) Knight, daughters of Oscar S. Rixford.

Most of the materials in the Rockwell Family Papers relate to Ell B. Rockwell's many years of service on Lake Champlain steamboats.
