Abstract: Dr. Lyman Allen, 1872-1961, served on the faculty of the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, was professor of Surgery at UVM, chief of Surgery at the Mary Fletcher Hospital, and attending surgeon at the Mary Fletcher, DeGoesbriad Memorial, and Fanny Allen Hospitals. This collections contains a book of typescript poetry, much of it concerning Christmas, a 1950 travel journal, an audio tape of an interview from about 1960, information about his property, a letter regarding his induction into the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame, his resume, writings on medicine, and his obituary.

Abstract: Robert S. Babcock was a Republican Vermont state senator, a member of the Eisenhower State Committee, an alternate to the 1952 national convention, Lieutenant Governor for Vermont in 1959-1961, worked for the Political Science Department of the University of Vermont, and contributed to The Burlington Free Press, WCAX-radio, and WCAX-TV. Included in this collection are manuscripts for some of Babcock's writings and radio and TV addresses, a collection of his writings on the Vermont legislature, “International Federalism”, and an address given to the Middlebury Conference.

The Consuelo Northrop Bailey Papers contain materials documenting Bailey's political and legal careers, as well as her personal papers, which include correspondence, school papers, financial papers, writings, and similar materials documenting her life as well as the lives of family members and friends.

Abstract: Barlow's Insurance Surveys were published between circa 1870-1896. The site-specific surveys of industrial properties include a page of text and an isometric view and plan. The surveys describe buildings, special features, and available fire protection. They include notes about the business owners and the goods produced. Updated surveys were produced as the business activities and facilities changed.

Abstract: W.A. Bentley (1865-1931) is best known for his lantern slides of snowflakes, which gave him his nickname. This collection shows Bentley as a photographer of great talent and artistic sense beyond the technical ability requisite to his snowflake photography. Bentley’s relatives and neighbors, in Jericho, Vt., are the subjects of the photographs, as well as unpublished photographs of clouds, and some unpublished photographs of snowflakes. The collection illustrates how Bentley worked and the standards he set for himself.

Abstract: George Clinton Cary (1864-1931) founded the Cary Maple Sugar Company, which eventually grew to a million-dollar business, in St. Johnsbury in 1904. Cary had to file for bankruptcy in 1931, but the bankruptcy did not affect his company since the liabilities were mainly due to accommodation endorsements on notes and papers of business concerns. The collection consists mainly of correspondence and financial and legal records relating to Cary's bankruptcy and estate.

Abstract: Guy Catlin (1782-1853) moved to Vermont during the 1790's, joining his brother Moses in Burlington. Guy Catlin formed the Lake Champlain Steamboat Co., later Champlain Transportation Co., in 1813. In 1830, in partnership with his brother Moses, Guy erected the Burlington Flour Mill at Winooski Falls. Three years later the Winooski Manufacturing Co. was incorporated. The Guy Catlin papers contain family and business papers relating to Alexander Catlin of Litchfield, CT, Moses Catlin (1770-1842) of Litchfield and Burlington, VT, Guy Catlin of Burlington, and Lynde Catlin of New York City.

The letters pertain to all aspects of the company including daily business, passenger lists, specifications of new steamboats, finances, and employees. The photographs document both of Company steamboats and employees and officers.

Letters from Timothy Spaulding Holton (1882-1899), grandson of Thomas Holton and husband of Ann Joslyn Holton (1828-1913), to his daughters Nancy Maria Holton (1851-1872) and Edith Willcox Holton (1868-?) form a major part of the collection and are sent from the New York area, where he was living, often destitute.

Abstract: The Peake family arrived in the area that would become Addison County, Vermont, in 1779, when William Peake (1740-1813) moved with his family from Nantucket to the frontier town of Monkton. William's son Seth (1784-1827) settled in nearby Bristol in 1810 as a saddler and storekeeper, beginning more than a centry and a half of Peake residency in that community. The Peake Family Papers consist of approximately six linear feet of correspondence, bound manuscripts, diaries and other miscellaneous papers. The chronological span of the collection is from 1793 to 1955, with the heaviest concentration of material falling between 1840 and 1900.

Abstract: Richard Spear (1737 - 1788) moved to Shelburne, Vermont, from Braintree, Massachusetts, in the summer of 1783. He died five years later, but his sons Asahel (1778 - 1849) and Elhanan W. Spear (1782 - 1869) remained in Shelburne and raised families there. The Spear Family Papers contain an interesting variety of manuscripts from the 1790s to the 1940s.

Abstract: The Trinity College Collection contains the records of Trinity College of Vermont, a private Catholic college founded by the Burlington, Vermont chapter of the Religious Order of the Sisters of Mercy. The school offered a liberal arts undergraduate degree program for women from 1925 to 2001, when it closed due to financial difficulties. In the last twenty years of its operation, Trinity also enrolled adult students of both genders in undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The Trinity College Collection is comprised of materials documenting the founding, administration, academic programs, facilities, student affairs, and closure of the school, including manuscripts, financial papers, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and audio and video recordings.
