Abstract:
The Herbert Wheaton
Congdon Papers at UVM consist of six cartons, one box and hundreds of photographs and
notecards. Much of the collection relates to Congdon's part in the Old Buildings Project and his
later, individual work on early Vermont buildings. There are also papers, maps, glass slides and
photos from Congdon's work on the Long Trail and the Green Mountain Club, as well as 36
volumes of his diaries and a typescript of his unpublished 1400-page autobiography.

Abstract: James Marsh Read (1833-1865), an 1853 graduate of the University of Vermont, was an explorer of the American West and a Civil War soldier. He wrote critical essays about the events of the time and kept extensive correspondence with his family. These materials are combined with the collected research and manuscript of the collectionâs donor, Gretchen Howe Miller, providing insight into James M. Readâs life and the issues of this period in American and Vermont history.
