Scope and Content

The Richard Adelson Papers consist of one box of research notes and photocopies of correspondence from manuscript collections dealing with the John Henry affair (1812). John Henry (1776-1820?), an Irishman living in Windsor, Vt., was an integral player in an intrigue with the Governor-General of Lower Canada (Quebec), Sir James Craig.

An avid-embargo Federalist, Henry worked for Sir James Craig as a spy, paid to provide information on the mood of Vermonters toward the federal government, and the possibility of Vermont's separation from the United States and attachment to Lower Canada in the advent of the War of 1812.

The papers also contain Adelson's correspondence with various libraries and the Vermont Historical Society. In 1984 Adelson published an article in Vermont History based on this research.
