Personal and Family Papers (Series B)

Consuelo Northrop Bailey Personal Papers

Scope and Content Note

The Personal Papers subseries is divided into: Correspondence, Datebooks, Diaries, Financial records, Leaves Before the Wind manuscripts, Memorabilia, School Papers, Scrapbooks, Subjects files, and Teaching Records. Major correspondents include Greta Ainley (1917-63), Loren Flood (1921-76), Robert Ford (1934-40), Preston Fullerton Garvey (1921-1926), Carl Valdemar Johnson (1926-34), Sally Ford Miller (1930-46), Susanne Shallna (1925-73), Emma Tousant (1922-70), David and Truman Webster (Shelburne students) (1923-71), George Wildhagen (1956-60), as well as family members: Mary and Everett Wallis, Frederika and Winston Sargent, and Albon Bailey. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically with lesser represented correspondents in general folders by the letter of their last name. (Correspondence between Consuelo and her parents is found in the Northrop Personal Correspondence subsubseries.) Following the correspondents, are folders containing “Get Well” correspondence from the time of Consuelo’s stroke in 1975, and then Cards and invitations. As with much of this collection, there is some overlap of different series and subseries. Many of Consuelo’s friends were involved with the Republican Party or the legal profession. Some attempt was made to place the correspondence of non-family members in one place, either in Personal Correspondence or in Political Correspondence, depending on the nature of the correspondence and the nature of the relationship of Consuelo and the correspondent. There is also some overlap of family correspondence; Consuelo's correspondence with her parents is in the Northrop family correspondence and her letters to Mary, Everett, and Peter Bent are in the Wallis family correspondence.

Datebooks consists of more professional than personal line-item entries of meetings, etc., and span the years of 1940-73. Diaries consists mostly of “Line a Day” five year diaries that span the years 1908-76.

The Financial Papers are arranged alphabetically by subject. “Correspondence, invoices, receipts, statements” folders are arranged chronologically from 1918-76. Income tax returns are also arranged chronologically from 1924-75. Included among these papers are Bailey’s records of the Missisquoi Corporation from 1928-52, a corporation in which her aunt, Sarah Manley, had stock and with which Conseulo remained involved after inheriting the stock. For the records of the Iroquois Light and Power Company, which Consuelo managed for six years, see H.A. Bailey: Financial Papers.

Leaves Before the Wind was Bailey's autobiography, which was in its final stages of publication when she died. This subseries consists of correspondence regarding the publication of the book, and manuscripts and typescripts of various drafts of the book. Page numbers on folders refer to the corresponding pages in the published book. (e.g. Typescript and draft pp. 1-5 includes fourteen typed pages that correspond to pages 1-5 in the printed version of Leaves Before the Wind.

The School Papers subseries consists of Consuelo’s school writings, records, ephemera, and memorabilia related to her studies and is arranged by school: Sheldon, St. Albans, the University of Vermont (UVM), and Boston University. Sheldon and St. Albans are arranged primarily by grade and then by subject or type of material. The UVM and Boston University papers are arranged primarily by subject or type of material. There are also a number of Bailey's school notebooks arranged by subject.

The Scrapbooks consist mainly of albums of clippings that cover Bailey's achievements and interests.

The Subject Files are arranged alphabetically and include materials from her religious, estate, health, travel, genealogical, and other interests. There are a number of folders regarding the Brigham Hospital and the Brigham Academy (including papers concerning litigation in which Bailey and her sisters are plaintives). There are also a number of folders relating to the Zonta Club, of which Consuelo was a member. Folders entitled “Programs and event related ephemera” document many of the events which Consuelo attended from 1910-76. These are arranged chronologically, with the bulk of the folders covering the 1920s-1930s.

The Teaching Records consist of a few folders of Consuelo’s teaching papers, records, and memorabilia from her year of teaching in the Shelburne School (1921-22).

Henry Albon Bailey Papers

Biographical Note

Henry Albon Bailey (usually “Hal” or Albon), was born January 22, 1893, in Winooski, VT. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1915 and from Harvard Law School in 1918. He married Carolina (also Caroline) Henrietta Sinner June 24, 1919. She died February 1937 of cerebral meningitis.

H. A. Bailey was elected State Representative for Colchester in 1921. He wrote the city charter for Winooski and became its first Mayor in 1922. Albon was elected State Representative for Winooski in 1923-26, and was also appointed to the “flood session” of 1927. In 1929, Albon was elected to the State Senate for Chittenden County. He ran unsuccessfully for State Attorney General in 1930 and again in 1938.

Albon was commissioned in the National Guard in 1921, and served first as Captain Judge Advocate on the State Staff (1921-24) and then as Captain Judge Advocate with the 43rd Division staff (1924-?). He was a reserve officer during the 1920s and 30s. He was honorably discharged due to physical disqualification in 1941.

Albon began practicing law in Winooski and Burlington in 1920 and continued to do so until his bad health forced him to retire in 1943. In 1938, while running for VT Attorney General, Albon hired Consuelo to do title searching for his law practice. They were married September 2, 1940, and began the Bailey and Bailey law firm. Albon became ill in 1941 and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. His health deteriorated quickly at first, and he was cared for by Consuelo and her sister Frederika, as well as nurses, until his death on July 20, 1961.

Scope and Content Note

The H.A. Bailey Papers contain the Correspondence and Personal papers of Henry Albon Bailey and his family. Most of this correspondence is between Albon (or “Hal”) and Caroline, his first wife. (For correspondence between Consuelo and Albon, see CNB Papers Personal: Correspondence: Bailey.) The Correspondence is arranged by date and includes family correspondence from 1888-1961.

The Personal papers are arranged alphabetically by subject. These papers include appointment books and diaries, genealogical and biographical materials, legal documents, writings, and various ephemeral and memorabilia of Albon, Caroline, and their families, with most materials falling into financial, military, political, and school papers categories. The financial papers of Albon and some joint financial papers of Albon and Consuelo. The financial papers contain account books, check books, and tax returns, and include the records of the Iroquois Light & Power company, of which H. A. Bailey was co-incorporator in 1924. Consuelo took over Albon’s role in the company as his health failed. Iroquois Light & Power was sold to Green Mountain Power in 1946. His completed assignments for correspondence course work make up a good deal of the military papers. The political papers are mostly related to his terms as State Representative for Colchester and Winooski. Albon’s school papers include materials from his days at UVM and at Harvard Law School.

Northrop Family Papers

Scope and Content Note

The Northrop Family Papers include Correspondence, Family papers, Farm and business records, Household records, and P.B.B. Northrop's civic records. The Correspondence includes the correspondence between family members or between a family member and a friend or relative that is not of an overly legal, political, farm, or business nature. Some of the larger shares of correspondence include Jessie Griswold to P.B.B. Northrop (1882-89)(separated and placed at the end), Katie and Bent (1890-1922), a great deal of correspondence to and from Frederika (1909-99)(much of which is separated and placed at the end), and condolences on the deaths of Bent (May, 1922) and Katie (October, 1938). There are a few letters from Senator Edmunds (1886) and Representative Stewart (1888) to Bent, and a letter from a prisoner of war to Consuelo (1916). Because Katie moved with the daughters, first to St. Albans and then to Burlington, there is a great deal of correspondence between her and Bent, which is very informative of the activities, illnesses, accomplishments, quarrels, and interests of the immediate family of Consuelo as she grew up. Correspondence between the grown Northrop sisters, Mary Wallis, Consuelo Bailey, and Frederika Sargent, are found in the Personal and Wallis subseries.

The Northrop family papers include greeting cards, school memorabilia (mostly of P.B.B. Northrop), writings, horoscopes, wedding invitations, ephemera (such as programs), printed materials, (such as tracts), and even hair and tooth remains of the Northrop family. The family members represented in these items are Jonathan and Deborah Northrop (Bent’s parents), Bent and Katie Northrop (Consuelo’s parents), Mary, Consuelo, and Frederika Northrop.

The Farm and Business Records reflect the overlap of Bent Northrop’s farm expenses and business ventures. For example: Bent bought Bowker Fertilizer Company products for his farm and appears to have also acted as a salesman of the company to other local farmers. The bulk of the Farm and Business Records are labeled “Accounts, Correspondence” and are arranged chronologically. The accounts include receipts, invoices, bank account statements, and handwritten accounts. The correspondence includes invoice and receipt related correspondence, legal correspondence, advertising correspondence, and correspondence related to services or equipment. After Bent’s death, the correspondence includes that between the in absentia owners, Katie, Frederika, and Consuelo, and the tenants or farm workers. The records also include deeds, cow records, employee contracts, insurance policies and claims, tax records, etc. There are also several folders labeled “Sargent vs. Bailey,” which contain the records and correspondence dealing with the eviction of John Bailey from the Northrop farm. The several leases describe the daily business of running a farm in the 1930s – 1960s. There are detailed accounts and correspondence that describe the financial aspects of running a farm in Vermont from about 1880 – 1960. There are records that concern Bent’s involvement with the Lamoille Valley Creamery Association and some that deal with his Maple syrup business. There are photographs of the Northrop farm in the Photographs series.

The Household records contain financial, legal, and other records that generally pertain to the running of the household, as opposed to the running of the farm or businesses of Bent Northrop. The household records include account statements, bills and receipts, specific loans of Katie to Consuelo, deeds, loans, mortgages, leases, contracts, and legal court papers. Katie moved with her daughters to St. Albans and later to Burlington in order to be with them while they were in school, and then remained in Burlington permanently. There are financial records folders that are specific to the running of the household in Burlington from 1916-1938. There are also three folders containing Northrop genealogy records and notes.

The P.B.B. Northrop Civic Records contain the records of Bent Northrop in his political positions. In 1899, P.B.B. Northrop became the Selectboard Chairman of the town of Fairfield, Vermont, an office he held until March, 1906. Most of the records in this subseries deal in someway with this post. In 1906, Bent incorporated the Sheldon Poor House Association, and was the overseer and the law agent (Fairfield Vermont Reminiscences, edited by Eleanor Ballway, 1977: 35.) There are financial records, road commission records, liquor agency records, papers regarding the purchase of bonds to cover the town’s debt in 1899, records from the overseer of the poor, treasurer’s reports, town meeting notes and warnings, tax listings, and general fiscal records. In 1900, Bent was also the state representative for the town of Fairfield. There is one folder that contains items related to that office. Previous to his post in Fairfield, he held some position in the municipal government of Sheldon, a town his farm bordered, including School Committeeman. There are a few folders of Sheldon town records, Enosburgh town records, Fletcher town records, and Franklin County records in this subseries. According to Fairfield Vermont Reminiscences, Bent’s parents, Jonathan and Deborah Northrop, gave $3,000 to help start the Sheldon Library. The booksellers invoices in this collection could be related to this fund. While a state representative, P.B.B. Northrop oversaw the purchase of President Arthur’s birthplace. In 1893-97, Bent acted as the executor of the will of Martha Whitney and as trustee for her daughter, Nellie L. (Whitney) Marvin.

Biographical Note--Frederika Brigham Northrop Sargent

Frederika Brigham Northrop Sargent was born July 19, 1903 in Fairfield, Vermont. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1922, from the University of Vermont in 1926, and earned a M.S. degree in Library Science from Columbia University in 1941. She taught school for three years in Vermont and was an assistant librarian in the Billings Library of UVM for fourteen years. She served in the Vermont House as a representative of Fairfield for a two year term from 1953-54, during which time, she led the passage of a bill to build a replication of the Chester Arthur birthplace cottage.

In 1943, she moved in with Consuelo to help take care of Albon as his health began to deteriorate. In 1953, she married Winston Sargent, a doctor and a graduate of UVM, and moved with him to North Carolina, where she lived until her death in 2006. There is some of her correspondence in the Northrop Family Correspondence as well as some of her diaries, scrapbooks, and memorabilia in the Northrop Family Papers.

Biographical Note--Peter Bent Brigham Northrop

Peter Bent Brigham Northrop (known as Bent) (1856-1922), was the father of Consuelo Northrop Bailey. He was born and raised in Fairfield, Vermont, and attended the Sheldon district schools. He graduated from Goddard Seminary in 1883, and attended Columbian University Law School in the mid 1880s. In 1891, he married Katherine Fletcher a school teacher. They had three daughters Mary, Consuelo, and Frederika. He was a farmer all his life and served in various public offices at the municipal, county, and state levels. In 1899, he became the Selectboard Chairman of the town of Fairfield, Vermont, an office he held until March, 1906. While a state representative, P.B.B. Northrop oversaw the purchase of President Arthur’s birthplace. He died May 16, 1922.

Historical Note--Northrop Farm

P.B.B. Northrop bought the Northrop farm in Fairfield, Vermont, from his father Jonathan Northrop. Bent ran this farm until his death in 1922. After which, Katie ran the farm in absentia until her death in 1937. Frederika Northrop ran the farm until 1961, when it was sold to John Nichols and Almon and Dorothy Woodward. The business records include the records of a grist mill run by U. Brigham Northrop, Bent’s younger brother, and Bent from 1890-1895, when Bent sold his share to his brother. Several farmers leased the farm after Bent’s death. John and Mary Bailey leased the farm from 1949(?)-1959, and Frederika corresponded with them during this time about the management of the farm. The final couple of years (1959-1961) include the correspondence dealing with the financial collapse of the farm and its restoration and eventual sale. After the sale of the farm to the Nichols and Woodwards, Consuelo and the Nichols continued to correspond until around 1965. The Nichols and Woodwards were still paying Frederika and Consuelo for the farm, and Frederika and Consuelo were receiving percentages from milk sales.

Fletcher Family Papers

Scope and Content Note

The Fletcher Family Papers subseries contains family correspondence arranged chronologically and spanning the years 1826-1963. The principle correspondents are Ruth Colton (Katherine’s paternal grandmother), Della Oakes (Ruth’s daughter), Henrietta Smith Fletcher (Katherine’s mother), Bess(-ie) Fletcher Walsh and Carrie Fletcher Whitcomb (Katherine’s sisters), and Jean Whitcomb (Carrie’s daughter-in-law). Thus, four generations of correspondence between women family members are represented in this rich collection of family correspondence. The bulk of the remaining Fletcher Family materials are Katherine’s Schoolwork and Genealogical Research. There are also some Family Papers such as birth certificates and deeds, as well as Katherine’s scrapbook, and Ruth Colton’s Bible.

Biographical Note--Katherine Fletcher Northrop

Katherine Fletcher Northrop (known as Katie) was the mother of Consuelo. She was born in 1870 to Andrew Craig and Henrietta Lurena Smith Fletcher in Jeffersonville, Vermont. She attended the village school and Johnson Normal School, graduating in 1888. She taught in the Lamoille County School District until she was hired for the Sheldon school by Peter Bent Brigham Northrop, whom she married in 1891. She moved with her daughters to St. Albans so that they could attend school there in 1910, and moved again in 1917 to Burlington, when Consuelo entered the University of Vermont. She died in Burlington in 1937.
