Consuelo Northrop Bailey Papers

Collection Inventory

Photographs Scope and Content Note The Photographs series consists of all of the photographic materials collected by Consuelo or other persons or families represented in the collection. It contains photographs created or collected in Consuelo’s political contexts, in the context of her personal life, as well as some photographs from the client files of her and Albon’s legal practice. The series includes the personal and family photographs of H. A. Bailey, the Northrop family, the Fletcher family, the Wallis family, and the Sarah and William Miller family. Photographs which cannot be identified as belonging with a person or family are included in the Unidentified Photographs subseries. The Political Photographs document Consuelo throughout her career in politics in Vermont. There are group portraits of her with the Vermont legislature and other political bodies, there are photographs of her with various national political figures like Eisenhower and Nixon, there are photographs of political figures in Vermont such as Charles Plumley and Ernest Gibson Sr., and there are photographs from several of her State’s Attorney cases from 1927-1930. Consuelo’s Personal photographs document her life after graduating from B.U. There are several portraits, as well as snapshots of her, friends, family, correspondents, and places she visited and lived. The Northrop photographs subseries contain photographs of Consuelo before she graduated from college, of Mary before she married Everett Wallis, of Frederika, of their father Peter Bent Northrop, and of their mother Katherine after she married Bent. There are also photographs of previous generations of the Northrop and related families. The H. A. Bailey, Wallis, and Miller photographs contain the collections of personal and family photographs of Consuelo’s husband, her sister Mary and husband Everett, and her friend Sarah and husband William. These contain formal portraits and informal snapshots of people and places in their lives, the bulk of which spanned the first half of the 20th century. The photographs range in date from the 1860s to the 1980s. Many types and formats of photographic materials are represented in this series including: Ambrotypes, tintypes, albumen cartes de visite and cabinet cards, cyanotypes, carbon prints, photogravure, nitrate and acetate film negatives, acetate 16mm and 8mm film reels, 35 mm photographic slides, as well as the more common Developing-Out Paper gelatin silver prints (black and white) and the Chromogenic Development color prints.
