The Baldwin Refrigerator Company Papers were donated by Miss. Marion Smith at Burlington on November 2, 1970.
Company History
The Baldwin Refrigerator Company was a concern for the manufacture of wooden refrigerators. The company was founded about 1889 and located in Burlington, Vermont. Some of the principals connected with the company were: Elias Lyman (President), G.J. Smith (Manager ?) And Ernest E. Smith (President and son of G.J. Smith).
Scope and Content
The collection contains financial records, minutes of company meetings, correspondence with stockholders and some general correspondence. Although the collection contains no day to day record of financial transactions, the record we have is fairly complete. The minutes of the meetings of both directors and stockholders remain unbroken from the inception of the company through its liquidation in 1936. Crises and important developmental phases are supplemented by loose correspondence and stockholders notices. In addition to the more explicit records, there are two important letters of resignation written by G.J. Smith outlining the state of the company midway in its operations (1910). These present not only current problems, but projections for the future of manufacturing and business in the American West.
