Biographical Note
Ray Bearse was born in Brandon, Vermont, and worked as a newsman and foreign correspondent for the Associated Press, the London Daily Mail, the Stockholm Tidnengen, Time-Life, and the Paris Edition of the New York Herald Tribune. He is the co-author of Conspirator: the Untold Story of Tyler Kent, and Centerfire Pistol and Revolver Cartridges, the author of Sporting Arms of the World, Centerfire American Rifle Cartridges, 1892-1963, and the editor of guides to Vermont, Maine, and Massachusetts.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains research materials, photographs, and drafts of work by Ray Bearse. The bulk of the collection is photographs and chapter drafts for an unpublished book on Vermont covered bridges. There are 132 photographic prints documenting bridges around the sate. Also in the collection are other Vermont photographs; correspondence with Irene Allen about Westford Soldiers’ Monument; materials related to gold mining in Nova Scotia; a draft article about sculptor Larkin Goldsmith Mead; and a transcript of an interview conducted by Bearse with John Coolidge, son of Calvin and Grace Coolidge.
