Note: There is an address here by Thomas Hawley Canfield to the International Deep Waterways Association meeting in Cleveland, Ohio on September 24, 1895. In this speech, Canfield recounts the development of railroads over the last half of the 19th century and the need for the development of deep waterways through to the Great Lakes. He spoke of the value of a ship canal to Burlington if it were constructed between Lake Champlain and the St. Lawrence River. Canfield was introduced as "the father of the ship canal idea and the founder of the Deep Waterways Convention" in Burlington in 1849.
