Biography

Abel Castle, father of Marshall, settled in the town of Essex about the year 1785. "Uncle Able" lived and died on the farm where he settled, and left as many children and grandchildren as he had years of age when he died at 95. In 1789 he was elected town selectman. Marshall Castle also lived to ripe old age, and left a good record as a Christian man and a citizen. He represented the town in the General Assembly, and held other important offices of trust. In 1827, Marshall and R.B. Butler donated the land for the first Baptist Church which was erected on the same site as the present church. For background of the town of Essex, see W.S. Rann, History of Chittenden County Vermont, 1866, pp. 568-592.
