Clarence P. Cowles was born in Albany, Vermont on August 30th, 1875, and continued to practice law in Burlington until his death in 1963. Judge Cowles graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1894, received A.B. (1898) and A.M. (1901) degrees from Princeton University, L.L.B. from New York Law School (1901) and was admitted to the New York Bar (1901) and the Vermont Bar (1904). He was married to Laura E. Golden of Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 21, 1905, and was father to four children: Lawrence, Richard, John and Mary. During his distinguished career, Judge Cowles was a member of the Burlington Board of Aldermen (1909-1913), Municipal Court Judge of Chittenden County, and Probate Court Judge of Chittenden County from 1923-1929 and 1929-1935 consecutively. He was both member and trustee of many Vermont associations, including the Green Mountain Club, and published pamphlets on probate court, settlement of estates, wills, criminal law and jurisprudence. He was a Republican, a Mason and a Congregationalist. His law firm of Cowles and Cowles wsa located at 162 College Street and his residence at 100 Ledge Road, both in Burlington, Vermont.

Scope and Content

The Cowles collection contains personal papers, that is, correspondence, writings of C.P. Cowles, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks and memorabilia. Much of the material relates to family matters, but there is a sizable quantity of writings on the practice of law and the judicial system. Some other subjects include: Vermont landscape and the Monroe-Cowles expedition up Mt. Mansfield, local church and religious matters, patriotic writings and Princeton University memorabilia. The arrangement is alphabetical according to subject and chronological within each subject. The accompanying binders contain materials similar to the boxed papers, but have been retained in their original order. The scrapbook contains memorial memoranda concerning the death of Laura Cowles.
