Background Note
The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, a public library in St. Johnbury, was endowed by Horace Fairbanks in 1871. The original 9,000 volume book collection was assembled under the guidance of the noted bibliographer William F. Poole. The first catalogue of the Athenaeum's holdings was published in 1875, with an 1890 addendum. In 1902 the library materials were reclassified using the Dewey Decimal System. A children's wing was added in 1924. In 1960, this wing was remodeled to house additional stacks and the children's space was moved to the former lecture hall on the second floor. Until the 1990's, the Librarian served as the de facto director of the institution. From 1993-1997, a position of Executive Director was created, which no longer exists. Today the Head Librarian manages the daily operations of the Athenaeum, in cooperation with the Administrator and the Art Gallery Curator.

Stein (Librarian 1987-1993) to the Athenaeum's Board of Trustees on an annual basis.
