Biographical Note

Born in Manchester Depot, Vermont, on April 2, 1898, Ella Brown grew up on a farm in nearby Arlington. After attending high school in Roxbury, Massachusetts, she took a one-year secretarial course at Northampton Commercial College, and worked at Massachusetts Agricultural College for two years before marrying Howard Leigh Russell in 1918. The Russells lived in Detroit and Pennsylvania until Mr. Russell's death in 1951, when Mrs. Russell moved to Sarasota, Florida. She returned to Manchester, VT, in 1973, and five years later moved to Brattleboro.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists almost entirely of Mrs. Russell's journals from 1932 to 1976. In addition to their accounts of her daily life, the journals also contain frequent extended reflections on national and world affairs, literature, society, and art. The locales of the various years of the journals are: Detroit, 1932 - 34; Pennsylvania, 1934 - 43; Chicago, 1943 - 49; Sarasota, Florida, 1950 - 73; and Manchester and Brattleboro, VT, 1973 - 80.
