Scope and Content Note

The Savage Family Papers consist mainly of letters written to Reuben A. Savage and his wife, Elizabeth R. (Ladd) Savage by relatives and friends. The majority of letters were written between 1850 and 1890 with the highest concentration from 1860 to 1879. Most of the letters originated in New England, yet there is a significant number of letters from Baraboo, Wisconsin, where some of the Savages settled. The rest of the letters originated in such diverse places as Escondido, California; Lawrence, Kansas; and Metamora, Illinois.

Subject matter usually concerns the everyday life of the sender (weather, crops, health, etc.). As Reuben A. Savage was the deacon of the Congregational Church in Stowe for about 40 years (elected Sept. 24, 1854), there are many letters that deal with religious matters. There are also letters from soldiers from Stowe, Vt., during the Civil War.

The collection is arranged chronologically and occupies five (5) boxes. There is also an alphabetical list of all letter writers.
