Biographical Note
Worthington Smith was born in Hadley, Massachusetts, and, after graduation from Williams College in 1816, like his predecessors he attended Andover Theological Seminary. After completing his studies there, he took a position preaching in St. Albans, VT. He served as a trustee at UVM and Middlebury College from 1823 on. The university awarded him an honorary doctorate of divinity in 1845. He was at first reluctant to take on the position as president because of the low salary ($1000). His principle achievement was the re-opening of the medical school in 1854. His health began to fail, and he resigned in 1854 and died in 1856.
