John Spargo Papers
Collection Inventory
AutographsScope and Content NoteOver the last sixty years of his long life, John Spargo collected a wide range of antiquarian books and manuscripts. While most of these pertained to the history of Bennington, Vermont, Spargo also acquired a number of autographs and manuscripts of notable Americans and Europeans. Spargo kept all of these manuscripts together as one collection, and when he donated his personal papers to the University of Vermont in 1963, the Spargo Autographs constituted part of the gift. The Spargo Autographs consist of three cartons of manuscripts, photographs, typescripts, and miscellaneous paper items. These range chronologically from 1684 to 1939, and geographically from Bennington, Vermont to Spain. The collection arrangement is alphabetical by individual, company, and subject, with a chronological sequence within each alphabetical listing containing more than one item. The overwhelming majority of the Spargo Autographs are of historical Bennington origin and interest. These Bennington papers include letters by local notables, church papers, notes and clippings on various aspects of Bennington's past and miscellaneous other local manuscripts. The primary focus is on eighteenth and early nineteenth century Bennington, but there are also a number of later items, as well. Within the Bennington portions of the Spargo collection, there are a number of major groups of manuscripts. Spargo managed to accumulate modest holdings of the papers of several important Bennington individuals and families, and these constitute a significant segment, in both size and historical value, of the collection. Most noteworthy among these groups of papers are the manuscripts of Henry Fassett (2-61 through 2-68), Hiland Hall (2-93 through 2-97), the Anthony Haswell family (2-100 through 2-116), the Robinson family (3-70 through 3-81) and Isaac Tichenor (3-124 and 3-125). The largest single group of manuscripts in the collection consists of the papers of the Bennington Battle Monument Commission (1-19 through 1-49). These are primarily the correspondence and other papers of Charles M. Bliss, who devoted much of the last twenty years of his life to the projects and goals of the Commission. The BBMC papers include excellent documentation of the plans for the centennial of the Battle of Bennington in 1877, numerous papers relating to the design, construction, and dedication of the Bennington Monument, and the celebration in 1891 of the centennial of Vermont's admission into the Union. This section of the collection also contains many letters and notes from distinguished Americans of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, most of which are brief responses to Bliss' invitations to attend one or another of the BBMC's historical celebrations. Aside from the Bennington papers, the Spargo Autographs also contain single manuscripts of a large number of noted early Vermonters. While many of these are in the BBMC section, there are other Vermont letters and papers scattered throughout the collection. Included here are items of Daniel Chipman, Thomas Chittenden, George F. Edmunds, Horace Everrett, Solomon Foot, Jonas Galusha, Asa Lyon, Orasmus C. Merrill, Jusin S. Morrill, Edward J. Phelps, Royall Tyler, Cornelius P. Van Ness and many other famous eighteenth and nineteenth century Vermonters. Most of these individual pieces are of limited significance, but at least a few have some appreciable historical content. Beyond the Vermont papers, the collection includes manuscripts of a diverse range of American and English figures. These include such notables as Enrico Caruso, Georges Clemenceau, Frederick Douglass, Havelock Ellis, Enrico Ferri, Millard Fillmore, William Dean Howells, Andrew Johnson, Robert E. Lee, Franz Liszt, James Monroe, Edwin M. Stanton, Jonathan Trumbull, H.G. Wells, John G. Whittier and Efrem Zimbalist. Filed under Vermont listings but cross-indexed in the inventory are letters from other famous political, literary, and military personages: Ralph Waldo Emerson, James A. Garfield, Henry Cabot Lodge, James Madison, Timothy Pickering, Carl Schurz, Philip H. Sheridan et alii. As with many of the Vermont autographs, most of these national and international papers are of interest largely because of their origin rather than for their actual content. |
