Historical Note
The Vermont Farm Bureau was organized in 1915 with Ellsworth B. Cornwall as its first president. Prior to 1915 only independent county farm bureaus existed. The Vermont Farm Bureau has been instrumental in bringing about legislation beneficial to farmers, and it has served the farmer as an educational and social institution.
Scope and Contents Note
The Vermont Farm Bureau Papers contain correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings and printed matter. Although the material spans the period 1895-1968, most of the papers fall between the years 1919-1930. The overall arrangement is chronological, and topics with each year are arranged alphabetically. In addition to the statewide concerns of the Bureau, the collection includes correspondence with county and out-of-state farm bureaus, and the American Federation of Farm Bureaus. Some of the more prominent subjects in the collection are dairy, livestock and grain marketing; the Muscle Shoals Project; minutes of the annual meetings of the Vermont Farm Bureau; publicity, and relevant legislation. Pre-1915 material consists of a few clippings and publications.
