Peter Thacher Washburn was a Vermont Governor and Lawyer in Ludlow and Woodstock, Vermont. Collection includes letters books (2v.) of family correspondence (1839-58), letter books (2 v.) of business and legal correspondence (149-53), and manuscript records and transcriptions (1v.) of Vermont county court cases (1836-52).

Biographical Note

Peter Thacher Washburn was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, on September 7, 1814. His family moved to Vermont in 1817, eventually settling in Ludlow. A graduate of Dartmouth in 1835, Washburn became an attorney in 1838, practicing in Ludlow and Woodstock in partnership with Charles P. Marsh. He served as reporter of the Vermont Supreme Court 1844-1852, represented Woodstock in the state legislature in 1853-1854, and served as Adjutant and Inspector General of Vermont 1861-1865. Washburn was elected Governor of Vermont in 1869, but died in office on February 7, 1870.

Scope and Content Note

The Peter Thacer Washburn Papers are composed primarily of bound letter-books, covering the years 1839-1858. Inculded are two volumes of Washburn family letters from 1839-1858, and two volumes of P.T. Washburn's business and legal letters from 1849-1853. The collection is completed by one bound volume of manuscript records and transcriptions of Vermont county court cases from 1836 to 1852.
