Scope and Content

The completed forms recording observers’ morning call in reports. The form changes over time but collects the basic information including: conditions, cloud cover, precipitation, temperature (maximum, minimum, current). The form also contains observers’ information from other towns in the region such as West Burke and Waterford Vermont.

Scope and Content

The teletypes, and, after 1985, print-outs of temperature, dew point, wind direction and speed (given in knots), altimeter setting, and precipitation over a 6 hour period. Some sheets include recorded data of other New England sites.

Series 3 Cooperative Meteorological Observers Records/River & Climatological Charts, 1894-1997, gaps     .5 linear ft.

Scope and Content

.5 linear feet, are the monthly charts of daily weather observations. The chart includes daily climatological information such as temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, cloud cover, wind speed and direction. Additionally, maximum, minimum and mean temperatures, precipitation, and remarks on the character of the day and phenomena, such as thunder, may be included. Monthly summaries and averages are noted. There are two filing sequences: Cooperative Observers Records, 1894-1991, .5 linear feet, and the River and Climatological Charts, October 1991-1997, with gaps, .5 linear feet. Note that some records from the 1890s are torn or fragile.

Series 4 Daily Observations, May 1960 - Aug 1992     .5 linear feet

Scope and Content

Contains the monthly summaries of observations taken daily at 7 am, noon, and 5 pm. The forms contain basic climatological information: temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, cloud cover, wind speed and direction, as well as any comments by the observers. These forms are filed with the Synoptic Records, series 5, after August 1992.

Series 5 Synoptic Observation Records, Nov 1961-Oct 1975     .75 linear feet

Scope and Content

The 3- and 6-hourly synoptic observations, transferred from other recordings to the monthly form. The forms contain basic climatological information: temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, cloud cover, wind speed and direction, as well as any comments by the observers. Some of the records are accompanied by notes of questions and comments returned from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. Daily Observations are filed with the Synoptic Observations after Aug 1992.

Series 6 Radio Broadcast Scripts, 1980-83, 1985-90     5 linear feet

Scope and Content

The scripted forms used to offer forecasts over local radio station WSTJ. Fairbanks Museum staff narrated the 2-and 3-day forecast Mondays through Saturdays. In addition to the narrations, the scripts may include notes and commentary.

Series 7 Weather Files, 1948-1971     .5 linear feet

Scope and Content

The subject and correspondence files maintained by Fred Mold. The files contain the correspondence between Mold and Weather Bureau officials, directives, manuals, a few newsletters, and certificates. They include information about certifying observers; synoptic directions and corrections; observersÂ’ obligations to present weather data to a court, and similar material. Also included is Franklin Fairbanks Weather Journal, 18 May 1858-May 1861 (gap Apr 1859), one notebook, containing 7AM, 2PM, and 9PM observations of temperature, barometric pressure, cloud type, cover and motion, surface wind direction and speed, daily precipitation times and amounts including snowfall, and miscellaneous remarks.

1.5 linear feet, contains other weather charts including: Barograms, 1955-89, .75 linear foot. These forms record barometric pressure charted at 5 day intervals. Those from 1955-1968 are photocopied. A sampling of Thermograph charts, 1962, record temperature, including a reading from N. Danville, VT. Hygro-thermograph charts, 1958-1983 (gaps), .5 linear foot, record weekly humidity and temperature readings. A sampling of Draper Thermometer charts, 1894 and 1963-5, record temperature. Series 9 Anemograph Charts, Feb 28, 1956 - Dec 21, 1994 (1980-81 gap)     24 linear feet

Scope and Content

The continuously recorded wind speed and direction charts, recorded on a paper roll. The charts cover 10-14 day periods, until Sep 1984, when they cover 30-33 day periods. The charts are stored in specially sized boxes each containing 16 rolls.
