Scope and Content
This collection consists of two parts: the recorded activity of the Bakersfield Congregational Church and its various membership organizations, and coverage of other Bakersfield community organizations.
The non-church material includes the Records (1875- 1893) for the school district, the Minutes for meetings of the school board, on "out name book" (1946-1947) for the Free Public Library, and the hiring record (1850-1861) of an unknown farm laborer. The remainder of the collection, spanning the years 1865 to 1928, concerns the Congregational Church.
The activities of the three women's organizations, the Ladies' Congregational Aid society, the Young ladies' Auxiliary, and the Ladies' Auxiliary are detailed in the constitution, treasurer's's records and minutes for the Congregational Aid Society, and in records and records of collections for the two Auxiliaries.
The remaining material includes Sunday school collection and attendance compilations, the constitution and by-laws of the Parsonage Association and Christian Endeavour, and the Congregational Church Society Records (1870-1914). The records are noteworthy for their mention of the transformation and absorption of the Congregational Church into the First Congregational Church in 1914.
