Carlson served as president of the University of Vermont from 1950-1952. The collection is arranged chronologically and then alaphabetically within academic year, and contains correspondence, memos, reports, and other administrative materials. There is also material related to the 1950 self-study, performed every decade for re-accreditation.

Biographical Note

William S. Carlson served a brief presidency from 1950-1952, at which time he resigned to take the presidency of the State University of New York. Born in 1905 in Ironwood, Michigan, he earned all three degrees in geology at the University of Michigan. After teaching at the University of Minnesota from 1937 to the start of the war, he served in the War Department, attaing the rank of colonel in the Army Air Force and was warded the Legion of Merit. In 1946 he became president of the University of Delaware. His brief tenure at UVM was followed by an unsuccessful stint at SUNY, where a dispute with the board of trustees led to his resignation in 1958. He served with distinction as president of the University of Toledo for fourteen years. He died in 1994.
