Marguerite Murphy Jackman was born on February 2, 1906, the daughter of J. Edward and Flora Henry Murphy. She married Lawrence McLam Jackman of Corinth, Vermont, on November 28, 1928. Mrs. Jackman was an avid local historian, devoting great amounts of time and energy to recording and preserving the history of Corinth. In addition to saving many valuable historical manuscripts from destruction, she also served as the principal author of the impressive 508-page History ofCorinth, Vermont 1764-1964 (Corinth, 1964).

Born on June 14, 1903, Lawrence McLam Jackman was educated at Goddard Seminary and the University of Vermont. For much of his adult life he owned and operated a b9bbin mill at East Corinth, continuing a business his grandfather had started in Topsham in 1871. A leader in Republican Party politics in Orange County, Mr. Jackman served seven terms in the Vermont House (1957, 1959, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1971, and 1973) and one term in the state Senate (1961).

Scope and Content

The Jackman/Corinth Papers consist of three cartons and one document box of manuscripts. The collection includes a few folders of Jackman family material, but the majority of the papers relate to Mrs. Jackman's work on the history of Corinth. This includes voluminous notes for the 1964 History, as well as galley proofs and her annotated copy of the published book, newspaper clippings about local events, and photographs of Corinth and other Orange County towns.

The collection also contains a variety of original eighteenth and nineteenth-century Corinth manuscripts. There are papers of the Andrews, Darling, Hazeltine, Knight, and Rowland families, a nineteenth- century local district-school record book, some local diaries, and various other early local primary sources. In conjunction with Mrs. Jackman's notes and the published 1964 History, these manuscripts provide an interesting look at the history of a rural eastern Vermont town.

The arrangement of the collection is by topic, with the Jackman family miscellany and Mrs. Jackman's historical notes in Cartons One and Two, and the original Corinth historical papers in Carton Three and Container Four.

The Jackman/Corinth Papers came to the University of Vermont in July 1987 as a gift from Winthrop T. Jackman (UVM 1955) and Jane Jackman Fehrs, children of Lawrence and Marguerite Jackman.
