History
The Essex Community Players was formed in 1959 and presented its first production, You Can't Take It With You, in May of that year. The Second production of the players was Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit performed in March 1961. The productions of the group were often presented at the Essex Junction High School or wherever it could find an empty stage. In 1965, however, the Essex Community Players leased from Essex Town the old Town Hall (1871) and renovated it to serve as its home theater.
The Players was organized for "recreation, stimulation, and a means of raising money for worthy causes." The first president was Mrs. Philip "Bess" M. Cohen, and the first secretary-treasurer was Mrs. Michael Klyszeiko. Originally called the Essex Players, the group changed its name in 1965 to the Essex Community Players.
Scope and Content
The collection, on loan from the Players, consists of business records, chiefly bills, invoices, and receipts, although some correspondance, programs, a ledger, and membership lists are included. As more material is discovered by members of the Essex Community Players, it will be added to this collection.
