Historical Note

The First Baptist Church of Burlington, Vermont was organized on September 26, 1834, with an original congregation of five men and six women. Prior to 1834, the Baptists of Burlington had met as a branch of the Williston Baptist Church. During its first few years of independent existence, the Burlington church had no regular pastor, and was in danger of being disbanded until the late 1850's. Support picked up during the Civil War, however, and a large new church building on St. Paul Street was dedicated in 1864. Since then, the First Baptist Church has grown steadily in both size of congregation and scope of church activities. In 1970, the Church membership was about 600.
