- The Hubbard Family Papers consist of one box of family correspondence from the years 1825-1878. Probably the major interest of the Hubbard Family Papers lies in the considerable number of letters to and from Vermonters serving as soldiers during the Civil War.

Biographical Note
The family of Asahel and Jerusha Houston Hubbard were sheep farmers in Whiting, Vermont in the mid-nineteenth century. Of their several children, Asahel H. Hubbard (1883-1916) developed a 350-acre farm in Whiting, specializing in "pure blood improved Spanish Merino sheep." Another son, Franklin J. Hubbard, enlisted as a musician in Vermont's 2nd Battery Light Artillery in December of 1861. He was taken prisoner by the Confederate army on August 3,1863, and died in Andersonville Prison Camp on June 19,1864.
Scope and Content Note
The Hubbard Family Papers consist of one box of family correspondence from the years 1825-1878. There are a number of letters from friends and relatives who moved to the Midwest before the Civil War, as well as several dealings with the family's sheep breeding business. Many of the letters in the collection are from Mrs. Hubbard's cousin, Jane Betsy Warren Ripley of Rutland, Vermont, and concerns family activites and individuals in that area.
Probably the major interest of the Hubbard Family Papers lies in the considerable number of letters to and from Vermonters serving as soldiers during the Civil War. These letters, many of which are from, to or about Franklin J. Hubbard, containing a good deal of interesting civilian and military material on the war.
The collection has been arranged chronologically. There is a card index to the Papers, prepared in the 1940's or 1950's, at the end of the Manuscript Catalog in the Special Collections reading room. Although this index has some inaccuracies, it may be useful as a supplementary guide to the Papers.
