Biographical Note
Shannon B. McCune (1913–1993) was born in North Korea, the son of Presbyterian missionaries. He graduated from the College of Wooster in Ohio, received a master's degree from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in geography from Clark University. He taught at Ohio State University and then was chair of the geography department at Colgate University from 1947 to 1955. From 1955 to 1961, he served as provost of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He then left academia and the United States to serve as the first civil administrator of the Ryukyu Islands from 1961 to 1964. He became the president of the University of Vermont in 1965, but resigned one year later for a research trip to Asia. In 1969 until his retirement in 1979 he was a professor of geography at the University of Florida in Gainesville.[1][2]
His principle mark on UVM was his creation of three new vice presidents, for finance, academic affairs, and administration and student affairs; and the inception of the Canadian Studies Program.
