Biography

Lewis Douglas Meredith, professor, insurance executive, and public official, was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on May 7, 1905. He received his A.B. and A.M. from Syracuse University (1926, 1927), and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1933. Meredith served as an instructor at Syracuse (1925-1927) and as an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Vermont (1927-1935). He briefly held the position of Vermont State Commissioner of Banking and Insurance, but resigned in 1935 to join National Life until 1968, in a variety of high-ranking executive positions. During this period, he also served as an executive for numerous other companies, including Allegheny Airlines, Vermont Electrical Power Company, Vermont Yankee Nuclear power Corporation, Central Vermont Public Service Corporation, and the Chittenden Trust Company. In addition, he was named to many state and local welfare and service councils, committees, and organizations from the 1940s to the 1970s.
