Biography

Francis O. (Frank) Sawyer, of Burlington, VT, was commissioned Quartermaster of the 9th Vermont Volunteers with the rank of first Lieutenant on June 10, 1862. Prior to military service, Sawyer had been employed as an express agent. In 1863 he was appointed Brigade Quartermaster by General Isaac J. Wistar. On June 30, 1864 he received a promotion to Captain and Assistant Quartermaster, U.S. Volunteers. His duties include supplying military hospitals in Burlington and Brattleboro, Vermont, as well as the frontier cavalry outpost in St. Albans. Sawyer was mustered out of the service on May 30, 1866.

Scope and Content

The Francis O. Sawyer Papers consist of approximately one linear foot of manuscript material from the Quartermaster Corps, U.S. Volunteers. Purchase orders, vouchers, and requisition forms dominate the collection which also include duty orders, reports of deaths, and lists of captured deserters. The Papers are arranged chronologically by topic. Topical groups (i.e. fuel, horses, labor, etc.) are filed alphabetically and contain separate folders for purchases, requisitions, and vouchers. The collection offers information on the breadth of supplies required to sustain military and medical personnel.
