Biographical Note
Winfield T. Sherwood was born in the late 1860's in Unadilla Center, New York, the son of William and Lucy Tabor Sherwood. He married Helen Augusta Childs on September 23, 1893 and remained a widower after her death on July 3, 1924 until he died in 1926. Sherwood spent many active years in Sidney, NY involved in local real estate and business enterprises. For some time he was Vice President of the "Cartland Cart and Carriage Co." in Sidney, and was also employed by Sidney business men to attract new industries to the town. He was considered a prominent worker and contributed much to the town of Sidney. A renowned angler, W.T. Sherwood wrote many short stories which reflect his love of the out-of-doors and reveal the regional character of the Northeast around 1900. Many of his works appeared in the magazine Forest and Stream during that period. (included)
Scope and Content Note
The Winfield T. Sherwood collection contains the correspondence of W.T. Sherwood with two editors, and either the manuscripts or typescripts, or both, for thirty-eight short stories and novelettes. Most are marked as written in Sidney, NY, and none is dated. These folders have been arranged alphabetically. Also included are two certificates, a teachers and a graduation, and some undated, untitled manuscripts.
