Biographical/Background Note
The Town of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, was founded in 1787. The first Town Meeting was held in 1790.
Scope and Content
Includes financial records, correspondence, minutes, ledgers, pay vouchers, and related materials created and maintained by the Town of St. Johnsbury from 1790 to 1920. Major events documented in the records include St. Johnsbury's participation in the Civil War, the construction of roads in the community, the development of the Town's water works in 1876, and the establishment of the police department ca. 1856. Some of the records had been organized or identified by Claire Dunn Johnson, a local historian, and may have been used in her research. In some instances, Johnson's notes accompany the materials. Any order she imposed has been largely retained.
