Note the new integral curbing and gutter just constructed on the top of the old stone retaining wall about ten feet in front of the house; also the old wooden stairs necessary to descend in order to enter the ground floor of the house which is approximately ten feet below the surface of the street; also not condition of old chimney which was later rebuilt on the outside of the house.

The chimney being constructed was carried to the sub-foundation footings to prevent settlement. Note the cement blocks used for the cellar walls on top of the concrete sub-cellar foundation walls; also note that the sills have been replaced and new clapboards and siding have been completed; also note that the filling has been carried to a point even with the front of the house which is approximately fifteen feet back of the street line; also note completion of sidewalk construction on new fill and approach to house.

This added considerable weight to the structure and with the rotten condition of the sills (the sill in the right foreground having been entirely gone and the sill shown in the picture is a new timber which had to be put in place before the house could be raised) made the raising process difficult.
