On board Steamer "Maple Leaf" at Morehead CityOct 30th 63 Dear Maria,

Page 1

We arrived at this place yesterday afternoon at about 4 oc P.M. but found no cars to take us on from here so remained aboard of the boat. On arriving here I learned that the rest of the Regt is about 10 miles from here at Newport barracks at the Newport River where the Rail Road crosses and that they are to remain there. We are now expecting cars to take us up there every hour I hear it is rather a dismal looking place and entirely away from every body This city is some like Yorktown but less of it and the query is why its called a City

I can write but little as my breakfast is about ready and it is past 8 oc- & I dont feel like writing on an empty stomach This is one of the pleasantest mornings I ever saw and as warm as a June day in Vermont. We dont intend to freeze here this winter- While I am writing about a dozen others are sitting around the table doing the same. I might have put all this in one letter but my other has been handed to the Capt of the boat & sealed- As soon as we get settled down I will write again I hope to hear from you soon we get mail here twice per week by the way of N. Y. City, so when you direct send via N.Y to Morehead city
