Joseph Spafford to Mary Jane Spafford
Primary tabs
I will write you a line to day as I am writing to mother. I recd your letter with mothers last night. I think Sergt. R. wrote home some pretty big stories. I don’t see what Barrett sent home for papers &c for unless he was short of money. He is a regular lunk head anyway tho’ I would not say so to everyone. Tell Lyd I feel very grateful to her for her sympathy for me, tho’ I dont know as she can do anything for me. It made me feel very badly to be obliged to pass her without having a chance to speak to her, nor even to say good bye. I knew her by her blue dress, & waved my cap at her, that was all I could do.
If I can possibly get a chance I will have a picture taken as you wished me to,
and send it home. I wish you to see that it is coppied, and send one
to Lizzie, & give one to Ellen. Now if I send one home, be
sure and do this for my sake will you not. Keep one yourself, send
one to L, & give E. one.
I shall send money enough & you may
use that. If Elsworth had his sword on one side & his sash on the other he
had them on wrong, that is not the
way. I would have all three pictures taken here, but, they will charge $1.00
each for such pictures as I sent home and try only once & I must run my risk
of getting a good one. The man is taking them just as fast as he can from
morning till night, sundays & all he will get as rich as he can
wish in a short time. I don’t see why there is not more of them here. I must
close – Good bye I shall write you as often as possible. My love to Aunt B.
Grandmother &c – Your Aff. brother
