Joseph Spafford to Mary Jane Spafford
Primary tabs
I am on board the “Elm City” about half way between New Haven and N.Y. We are to
land at Jersey City and that is the most we know, whether we are proceed
imediately to Washington or stop there awhile we do not know. We started from
our camp at Brattleboro last night about 5 o’clock, the cars left the Depot
about 9 and we got here and came on board about 6 this morning. It will be some
days before I can get another letter from home for which I am very sorry, but I
must
learn to make the best of such things. I am sorry I could not
have see you before we started and yet it would have been the same now, let us
make the best of every thing. I am as well as ever I was in my life. I shall
send this the first oppotunity. There will be no use in your writing me again
until you learn more of our destination. Yes write me as soon as you receive
this and direct to Washington. If I do not get it, it will not be much trouble
for you to write, and if I do you little know how much I shall prize it.
I gave H. B. Atherton a letter directed to father yesterday with
$25.00 in it, which he said he would send by express with other letters of the
same kind he had got to send. Tell L- to write when you do if tis only a line.
My love to her and all the dear friends at home. I will close. Good bye. Write
me often.
Your BrotherJos.
