This added considerable weight to the structure and with the rotten condition of the sills (the sill in the right foreground having been entirely gone and the sill shown in the picture is a new timber which had to be put in place before the house could be raised) made the raising process difficult. This view is taken from the intersection of Howard St. looking northerly to the intersection of Marble Ave. The excavation of the old pavement was partially done last winter and completed this month after which the sand cushion and telford stone base was constructed and the penetration course of chestnut stone has been spread over the telford base and roughly graded ready for rolling with the 15 ton steam roller. Note the condition of the old curbs which will be reset or replaced as the condition warrants. Show less

This view looking easterly toward North Ave. shows the work after it was practically completed on the south side. Note the large stump in the center background being hauled on a stoneboat by the four-wheel drive Walter truck. Approximately 650 cubic yards of rock excavation was removed from both sides of the street and used for filling and widening the shoulders. This project was requested by the Park Department to improve the safety of the traveling public in getting to and from North Beach. The work was done by the Street Department. Show less

City of Burlington, Vermont, Street Department Lakeside Ave. Pavement Base Construction This view was taken from a point near the intersection of Central Ave. looking easterly toward the underpass. Note that the temporary wearing surface had been constructed for the base after the work of mixing and stabilizing the base had been completed as shown in the picture under date of Dec. 5, 1945. This stage of construction was done to enable the street to be used during the winter and early spring without experiencing the troubles of early spring break-up of the old dirt and cinder street. The pavement will be completed in the summer of 1946. Note the crushed stone base placed in the driveway after regrading to meet new grades. To the left in background is the Blodgett Co. Show less

The old road bed was scarified, reshaped and treated with stabilizing emulsion late in the fall of 1938 and a base course of asphalt penetration was constructed with one application of 85-100 penetration asphalt binder. A wearing surface of two inches of Plant-Max asphalt using tempering fluid was constructed during the early summer of 1939. Show less
