Show more1951 / 1952 Saint Joseph's Church sanctuary with worshipers. Two boys look at the photographer as he takes a picture of the altar at St.Joseph's Church on the Old North End in Burlington, Vt. The altar is crowded with statues of saints and angels and decorated with candles, flowers, plants, and flags. High above the altar is a reproduction of DaVinci's "Last Supper," and a prominent statue of Mary under a canopy can be seen on the left. In keeping with the Tridentine rite of the Roman Catholic Church, the priest faces the altar (and not the parishioners, as in current practice) where the Latin texts are framed and set in place.
